Weight Loss
It Doesn’t Have to Be Hard
Did you gain more weight than you would have liked while you were pregnant? Have you struggled with your weight since you were a young child? We understand that being overweight or obese can be detrimental to your mental and physical health, and leave you feeling stuck. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We believe the first step towards successful weight loss is understanding why you weigh what you do, and what underlying factors may be making it more difficult for you to shed those excess pounds.
What Causes Weight Gain?
Contrary to popular belief, not everyone who is overweight eats too much. There are many reasons and contributing factors as to why people gain weight to the point of being overweight or obese. They include:
- Not getting enough exercise for the number of calories you take in
- Hormonal imbalance
- Pregnancy
- Menopause
- Aging
- Hypothyroidism
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Sleep problems
- Genetics
- Some medications
How Being Overweight or Obese Affects Your Health

- High cholesterol
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- Stroke

Even modest weight loss can mean big benefits. You’ll lower your blood pressure, reduce joint pain, and more.
Weight Loss FAQs
Q: How fast can I lose weight?
A: This depends on your individual circumstances. We advise against rapid weight loss as promised by diet pills and fad diets. Slower, steadier weight loss is the healthiest way to lose weight. That being said, you may shed pounds faster at the beginning of a weight loss program that involves reduced calorie intake and increased exercise.
You may eventually reach a weight loss plateau, or gain muscle weight. Remember that you may lose inches but not lose much weight at some point in your program. We will help you through any rough patches.
Q: Why is it harder to lose weight with age?
A: There are basically 5 reasons it’s harder to lose weight with age:
- You’re losing muscle mass, but eating the same amount. Most people lose muscle mass as they age, and since muscle burns more calories than fat, unless you’re doing some strength training to build muscle, you’ll gain weight.
- Hormonal changes. For women, menopause causes estrogen loss and causes extra pounds to settle around your belly. For men, a drop in testosterone that comes with aging can mean the body is less effective in burning calories.
- Your metabolism slows down with age. And having more body fat and less muscle mass exacerbates the situation.
- You’re busier with work. This can mean you sit more at work and during your commute, you skip lunch and get a snack out of the vending machine more often, and you’re too tired when you get home to even think about exercise. In addition, work-related stress can cause you to eat more and drink more alcohol, leading to increased weight.
- You have major lifestyle changes. These changes can start as early as your 30s. For women, starting a family can be the beginning of a battle with weight. Suddenly, it seems as if all your time is devoted to your children and you don’t have that extra hour to work out. At least one study shows that for men, simply getting married can lead to weight gain, as can fatherhood.
Q: How often and when should I weigh myself?
A: If you’re committed to weight loss, you should weigh yourself every day, preferably when you wake up, and before eating anything. A digital scale is best to show you the progress you are making, and encourage you to keep up the good work. Gaining half a pound because of a big meal the night before can also encourage you to scale back again on the caloric intake and take the stairs at work.
Q: Do you have some easy weight loss tips that don’t involve dieting or going to the gym?
A: While we don’t encourage dieting, but rather making healthy food choices, and we always encourage our clients to use our gym facilities, there are a few easy weight loss tips you can incorporate into your daily routine. They include:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Don’t skip meals.
- Use a smaller plate or bowl.
- Park further away from the building and walk.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Get enough sleep.
